Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona or New Mexico, Hopi Peoples, ca. second half of 20th century CE. An impressive wood kachina doll of the Ogre Woman, known as Soyoko or Soyok Wu-uti, in traditional garb with a black cloth cape, a yarn wedding belt made on her shoulders, a black skirt, white leggings, and an intimidating mask adorned with plumes and horsehair. Her evocative helmet mask displays projecting eyes, sizable red ears strung with feathers, a broad mouth formed from a strip of hide, a horsehair beard, and a mussed up horse hair coiffure. Soyoko is a member of the Soyok or ogre kachinas who enforce good behavior among children. Size: 8" W x 14.5" H (20.3 cm x 36.8 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

Missing objects in hands. Some losses to plumes. Old inactive insect holes in base. Light fraying and staining to cloth. Otherwise, very nice with great remaining pigments.
