Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi or Navajo, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved cottonwood kachina doll painted in bright hues and decorated with feathers. The figure stands on delineated feet under a broad skirted body, the arms folded inward, and a squared snout and protruding ears. The Katsinam, supernatural beings who live in the high mountains of the San Francisco Peaks above traditional Hopi territory, speak to the Hopi through costumed dance and song, and Katsina figures (katsina dolls, katsin-tihu), are made of cottonwood root to represent the costumed dancers that impersonate these supernatural beings.
