Description
Marc Chagall Etching - Dead Souls - Chagalls Medium: Etching and drypoint - for Gogols Dead Souls are among his earliest etchings. They are also some of his finest. Marc Chagall Les Âmes mortes (Dead Souls).
The image is matted and printed on an embossed paper. We have included a close up of the embossed outer edge - which can best be represented by touching the paper to feel the relief, or by viewing the corners of the image. We have sent a picture of this image to the Director of the Marc Chagall Museum in Vitebsk. Their opinion is that this image can be an original from The Dead Souls series (scene of tea between Chichikov and Korobochka). For reference - the owner can study Patrick Cramers catalog #17. The image size is approx: 8.86 inches tall x 11.65 inches wide. You can exclude the fake regarding the sizes. The new owner can gain a certificate of the piece. The official certificate of originality can be delivered only by Marc Chagall Committee in Paris.
Known as a Parisian artist, Marc Chagall always maintained an interest in his Russian origins and his Jewish heritage, and he often depicted scenes from his youth in the provincial town of Vitebsk. After working and exhibiting in Paris from 1910 to 1914, Chagall returned to Russia, where he remained until 1922. There he formed friendships with Russian avant-garde poets and painters and worked toward creating a modern Jewish art through his journal illustrations, childrens books, and designs for the Jewish State Theater. Chagall was introduced to printmaking in Berlin in 1922, at the age of thirty-five. (He would eventually complete one hundred twenty-three intaglios and woodcuts, more than eleven hundred lithographs, and thirty-eight illustrated books.)
