An 18th century German metalwares sauce boat, mark of Godet, Berlin, circa 1790, of oval form with reeded rim, lower with repoussé leaf decoration, applied mask under the pouring lip and curled flying scroll handle, gilded interior, raised on a pedestal foot, 19cm high, 10.4ozt Provenance: From the estate of the late Barry Lock (1934-2021) Godet is apparently the oldest jewellery firm in Germany. Founded by Jean Godet in 1761, it was first located at Schloßfreiheit 4 in Berlin. In 1796, it was taken over by his son, Jean Jacques, who was succeeded in turn by his son, Jean Frederic, and under his stewardship the firm became the official Court Jeweller to the Crown Prince of Prussia. In 1861, King Wilhelm designated Godet, then run by Jean Fredric’s son, Jean Pierre, the official purveyor to the Royal Court. In 1911, the firm was designated the Royal Court Jewellers by Kaiser Wilhelm II - the highest honour a German jeweller could receive.
