(ART.) Loïs Mailou Jones. Original portrait of Cuban educator Ana Echegoyen, done for the 1942 "Twelve American Women" calendar. Pen and ink drawing, 14 x 11¾ inches (13 x 10 inches to sight), signed "LMJones," taped and pasted into original 22 x 16½-inch paper mat featuring a hand-lettered caption and ink illustration (also by Jones?), with fragment of a small printed calendar for November 1942 laid down; moderate wear and staining to mat. No place, [1941] University of Havana professor Ana Echegoyen (1901-1970) is described here as "a young Negro educator and leader in women's social and civic movements of Cuba . . . supervisor of courses given for the training of teachers throughout her republic . . . beloved and esteemed by all the women of Cuba."
