Description
(Greenville, South Carolina/Catawba Valley, North Carolina, 20th/21st century) Southern stoneware double handled jug in the Edgefield, South Carolina style. The jug has been excellently potted in the phoenix factory style. The piece is a tribute to Dr. Abner Landrum the gentleman accredited with likely teaching David Drake how to read and write as a young man. The piece reads at top in Kaolin, " Great & Noble Potter ED:SC. and under the iron slip decorated silhouette Dr. Abner Landrum 1784-1859 Father of Southern Alkaline Glaze." The left and right of the jar having poems in kaolin slip by David Drake reading, " When Noble Dr. Landrum is head May Guardian angels visit his bed April 14, 1859 Dave." The opposing side reads, "Hive is eighteen ; hundred + fifty nine wunto you all I fill in --- cline , April 18, 1859 Dave." Inscribed under the right handle Bayne Make 1. Excellent condition. H18" W13" Sold from the collection of a Southern lady.
