Description
Case measures approx. 6 3/4" long x 4 1/4" wide x 1" high. Good antique condition with some wear according to age. No damage to glass containers. The prohibition from 1920 to 1933 hit lovers of the occasional drink hard. People grew so desperate for their Whiskey ration that they devised ingenious ways to circumvent the strict rules and even stricter punishments. One way to consume alcohol without needing to fear arrest and public exposure was to get a prescription to treat a real or - more often - imaginary desease. Whiskey was an illegal substance but "spiritus frumenti" (its latin name) was a miracle drug for a broad range of ailments. To support the purely medical purpose of the "treatment", Whiskey and other beverages were kept in laboratory tubes and other medical containers labeled with their fancy Latin equivalent names. The piece on offer is such a set of glass tubes still carrying their "spiritus frumenti" and "alcohol" labels in their original pouch...a testament to turbulent times and human ingeniuty in the face of hardship.
