Item Details
Description
Ancient Near East, Anatolia, Hittite Empire, Middle Kingdom, ca. 1650 to 1400 BCE. An attractive and rarely found pottery pitcher presenting an elegant silhouette with a globular body, a tubular neck, a long, beaked spout, and a high-arching handle, all sitting upon a petite foot. The redware body features a wet-smoothed finish. Pitchers of this kind were likely used in a ceremonial context for bringing liquid offerings to the gods and as libation vessels. Similar Hittite pottery jugs can be found published in "The Hittite Cemetery at Ferzant : New observations on the finds" by T. Ozguc (BELLETEN 50, 1986: 393-402 pp.).

A comparable Hittite pottery pitcher was sold for $1,680 by Christie's New York on December 9th, 2005 ("Antiquities" Live Auction 1584, lot 111).
