Item Details
Description
A Federal Inlaid Bird's Eye Maple and Mahogany Tambour Writing Desk
Horace Livingston, St. Albans, Vermont, Circa 1815
the top drawer of the upper case inscribed Horace Livingston / St. Albans / June 15th 1817, further inscribed and initialed throughout.
Height 56 3/4 x width 46 x depth 21 inches.

Note:
Horace Livingston is listed in the 1850 Census as a cabinet maker in St. Albans, Franklin County, Vermont, along with his wife Abigail and their eight children: John, Asa, Abigail, William, Edward, Cornelius, Emily, and Frederic.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
Condition
Retains an even and mellow refinished surface and patina. Scuffs, marks, and scratches consistent with age and use. The top case has a hinged lid for discreet storage and the hinges for the lid are detached, but retained. Areas of veneer lifting and some areas of veneer loss associated with the drying of the carcass and glue (some areas of veneer patched). There is a key that functions with the drawers of the lower case. The pulls, while aesthetically pleasing are likely early replacements. The knop pulls to the lopers and interior drawers are loose, those to the lopers will likely need some attention for proper reattachment. The writing slant, while functional with the lopers extended, will likely need to be reglued at the pegs and also repegged at the top of the writing surface where it meets the top of the lower case. Age cracks visible in areas, but more significant to the sides of the lower case. The proper left side of the lower case shows a crack that was patched and appears stable. The proper left loper is cracked along its top. The proper right side of the case shows an old vertical split towards the rear of the case that has been secured to the interior with a strip of wood that is 1/2 inch too long causing the two pieces to not be joined properly (this will require some level of restoration).
