Description
8.25" x 13.25". Enlistment papers of 21 year-old Solomon Taylor of Bath County, Virginia, dated August 19, 1799. Taylor is recorded as enlisting in the Infantry "during existing differences between the United States and the French Republic". Signed by Taylor and Charles Arbuckle, Justice of the Peace. The "differences" refer to the "Quasi-War" between the United States and France from 1791-1800, in which the two countries fought an undeclared naval war arising from disagreements as to the US' responsibilities under the 1778 Treaty of Alliance and subsequent refusal of the US to repay French loans. The famous "XYZ Affair" in 1797 ended any hope of peaceful negotiations. Solomon Taylor appears to have remained in Virginia after his military service and died in January 1815. He is buried in Old Stone Presbyterian Cemetery in Lewisberg, Virginia. **Very good condition. Some tears and imperfections to corners and edges with some fading of ink.** $400-$600
