Description
Pair 1840's Copper Plate Engravings: a young George Washington by J W Paradise after Chapman & Peale together with a young Martha Washington by J Cheney & J G Kellogg after Woolaston, each matted and framed in old gilt frames; with a note to the backs of the frames that the original portraits are "in the Possession of G W P Custis Esqr, Arlington House." and "found in the Whitemore Family Bible; the fold lines on both suggest the possibility both had been framed from an earlier time." Height of frame 8 3/4 inches (22.1 cm.) X width of frame 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm.).
Condition
The engravings appear with bends, minor stains and fold marks; not examined out of frames.
