American Rococo Revival Laminated Rosewood Sofa

third quarter 19th century, in the manner of John Henry Belter, New York, the elaborate crest rail pierced and carved with conjoined scrolls, cornucopia and foliate motifs, the tall center crest with a cluster of various flowers.

The sofa is sturdy and functional. The surface appears to have been vigorously cleaned and polished in the past, with some minor attendant restoration work such as gluing a few pieces of carving back on. There are scattered, normal shrinkage lines and indications of age and use. There is one old area of what looks like burn-in shellac at a veneer loss on the back scrollwork, about 1/4" wide and 1-1/4" high. The upholstery retains good shape and firmness. It exhibits some moderate wear along the front edge of the seat cushion. No rips, tears or holes were observed.
