Item Details
Description
18th c. portrait of a young girl, possibly French School, in oil on canvas. The sitter is depicted elegantly dressed, clasping a rose in one hand, while her other hand supports her lace edged apron, which has a nosegay resting atop it. The tag attached to the nosegay reads "Ut Phoenix multiplicabo. dies."
Height: 38 1/4 in x width: 28 3/4 in.
Condition
The canvas is slightly loose on the stretcher. There is craquelure to the surface throughout. There are several areas with cupping and there are a few areas of flaking to the paint. There are a few scattered spots of inpainting; primarily to the background. There is one possible area of inpainting to the figure’s forehead. There are a couple areas of yellowish discoloration, visible along the top of the figure’s apron. Canvas has been relined and the edges reinforced. There are a few raised areas along the lower right quadrant which appear to be the result of restoration. There are areas of discoloration to the lining verso. The artwork is not framed.
