Description:
Engraved (or lithographed?) bank notes filled out in ink. Each 10.5x23 cm (4¼x9"). Printed by Francis & Loutrel, N.Y.
Rare set of First, Second and Third notes of exchange, made out to Jackson Tittle, charged to Messrs. Winslow Lanair & Co., 52 Wall St., N. York. Signed Hurley McKnight & Co. There is a vignette of a steamboat on the certificate, and the place San Francisco has been crossed out, and Sacramento written in. The firm was formed by the merger of McKnight Banking and Exchange Office with Henley & Co. on March 9, 1850. It was to fail sometime that same year. During the Gold Rush, fortunes could be swiftly made, and often swiftly lost.
