Item Details
Description
5 ¼” length, flattened horn with oval domed wood base secured with wood pegs. Thickened conical spout The construction and shrinkage of the horn place this example in the pre Revolutionary War period, Likely before the French and Indian War. One side with scratched in 1860, likely as it saw its last use, probably in the Civil War. As flintlocks would have been used by the South only, owing to a shortage of weapons, it may be considered Confederate. Predating the attack on Fort Sumpter, but in the period when the South was arming for war. South Carolina adopted a declaration to succeed in December of 1860. Speculative, as are most Confederate weapons, however, it seems more likely that the date was applied by a Southerner anticipating secession than a later embellisher who would have chosen a more significant date like 1863.
