ANCIENT PARTHIAN VOTIVE PLAQUE FROM THE KUH DASHT HOARD
ANCIENT PARTHIAN VOTIVE PLAQUE FROM THE KUH DASHT HOARD
Item Details
Description
First century BC. The so-called Dark Ages of Parthia. Parthia, northeastern Persia, survived for centuries against the Roman and nomadic attacks. The Kuh Dasht Hoard was discovered in Northeast Iran in 1970 and contained about 700 silver coins and other objects including these votive plaques. As the coins were commercial only, the plaques, each of which is hand embossed with a stylus depicting a spiritual subject distinguish this find. This example was purchased at Phillips Auction, England in the 1980s and is among the very few examples in private hands. It is silver, 1 5/8" x 1 1/8" embossed with a beast and may have been a symbolic sacrifice representing a bull or ox. The borders stippled. Well preserved with fine patina. Plexiglas museum mounted with a certificate of authenticity and provenance.
