A LARGE ANCIENT ISLAMIC NISHAPUR OR SAMARKAND MULTI COLOR DECORATED SLIP PAINTED POTTERY BOWL 10TH CENTURY, NISHAPUR OR SAMARQAND SAMANID PERIOD. Measurement: 27 cm dia. Of Large Size & Very Decorated with Impressive Designs in multi colors, Black, Yellow, Red & Lustre. Beautiful Flowers, Motifs, Arabseque & Large Geometric shape & design in the center of the bowl. of truncated conical form with straight flaring sides on a low foot, decorated in coloured slips with a cruciform design chain-pattern borders,The technique of overglaze lustre firing was a closely-guarded secret in the 10th century and the potters of Nishapur had to be content with replicating the effect of true lustre using underglaze earthy pigments. As with the majority of Nishapur figural designs, the identity of the subject matter remains elusive.
