Description
**First Time At Auction**

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Washington, Cathlamet, Kathlamet culture, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. An incredible pecked and polished stone club weapon with a robust blunt blade and a grooved pommel with a bored perforation for adding a cord. Clubs were widely used by fishermen to stun or quickly kill prey, and they were also used as weapons and to settle disputes. Ornate clubs were carried as status symbols and ritual items during potlatches - the blade shape perhaps symbolic of canoe paddles that were invaluable for traversing the seas and waterways. The lack of heavy wear on the blade spines would suggest use as a ritual object rather than utilitarian. Size: 12" L x 3" W (30.5 cm x 7.6 cm)

This club was discovered during by Harold Grubenhoff (1934-2015) was a member of the Oregon Archaeological Society and avid collector of artifacts - many of which he found along in Oregon and Washington state. This club was found in Cathlamet Washington and was professionally analyzed by Jackson Galleries in Mount, Sterling Kentucky as well as Big Sky Enterprises Inc. in Piedmont, South Carolina.

For more information about this type of club please refer to the "Anthropological Paper of the American Museum of Natural History. Vol. VI, Part I. The Archaeology of the Yakima Valley" by Harlan I. Smith, 1910.
