Description
The Divine Face (Veronica's Veil)
El Divino Rostro (La Verónica)
oil on tin, framed.
19th c. Mexican.
After Jesus was mocked and crowned king with a torturous crown of thorns and as he was led along the Via Dolorosa to the Cavalry/ Cross (the Passion of Christ), a lady from Jerusalem named Veronica rushed to his side to wipe the sweat, blood and dust from his face; and she did this using her own veil. What she wiped away on this cloth has been painted here: a mirror image of Jesus just before his crucifixion--what is believed to be a "true image" or "vera icona" ("Veronica") of him. In this compassionate Mexican depiction of Veronica's Veil, drops of blood can be seen rushing and dripping from the crown as well as from his eye, a cheek wound and another neck wound; blood is even dripping from the three nails once used to display Veronica's Veil in public.
The original cloth relic (Volto Santo) is held at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and is one of the most prized relics of Christianity. (Saint) Veronica's act of kindness and compassion is represented in a Station of the Cross (it is number 6 out of the 14 stations visible in Catholic Churches worldwide).
