It's not hard to find limited edition books with pasted-in plates signed by R. Crumb, as the temperamental artist isn't averse to sitting and signing stacks of bookplates, although he has called the chore "a punishment." However, as anyone who saw Crumb's icy response to an autograph seeker in Terry Zwigoff's Crumb documentary can attest, it's awfully hard to get Crumb to sign comic books. He resents being asked. Indeed, PBA's Director of Comics has handled several consignments for Crumb, including the historic sale of Crumb's own copy of ZAP #1 (which PBA sold for a fat $27,500), yet he's never mustered the nuts to ask for an autograph. These two funnybooks were signed by Crumb for his chum Jeff Weinberg, a bookseller-publisher who's been pals with Crumb for ages, and who's one of the few fellows for whom Crumb will sign without scowling.
