An expressive acrylic painting on paper attributed to American abstract expressionist painter, Robert Motherwell. Initialed RM on front and verso titled "Love for Spain." Dated 1966. Motherwell created a series of paintings called Elegy to the Spanish Republic, which this painting has similar visual motif with the organic round forms juxtaposed to rectangular shapes. Dimensions: 8.75"h x 11"w (unframed). In very good vintage condition. From a private collection. This artwork is attributed to Robert Motherwell as provenance is unknown. This item has been reviewed by an accredited appraiser and is believed to be authentic, but with the lack of provenance provided we cannot confirm authenticity which is reflected in the reserve pricing. Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) was part of the New York School in the late 1940's and coined the term for the group of Abstract Expressionist artists working together in Manhattan such as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Motherwell's first one-man show was at Peggy Guggenheim in 1944 and in the same year the MoMA was the first museum to purchase one of his paintings. In the 1950's he taught painting and his teachings influenced Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, and Kenneth Noland. He also was married to Helen Frankenthaler. Motherwell has been featured in several exhibitions at major museums globally. In recent years, Motherwell paintings have reached auction records up to $11 million.
