CSA Pass Using the Southern Railroad Co., Destroyed During the War
A Confederate pass through Mississippi for a soldier in the service of the Mississippi Army. 1p, measuring 7.75" x 3.625", Grenada, Mississippi, dated December 13, 1861. The pass is made out to P. W. Shearer, who was granted a pass on the Southern Railroad Company, free of charge, from Bolton to Meridian. Signed by the Assistant Quartermaster. Toned throughout, with darker edges. Minor staining and chipping at the corners.
The Southern Railroad Company was chartered to construct a railroad from Brandon eastward through Meridian to the Mississippi-Alabama state line in February 1846. The company later acquired the Jackson and Brandon Railroad and Bridge Companies line between Jackson and Brandon in 1852. During the war, the railroad experienced all of the horrors of war. The territory through which it passed was the site of numerous battles, and the railroad and its rolling stock were frequently torn up, burned and destroyed by both sides. At the close of the war the company was left with nearly $2,000,000 of unpaid debts.
