Description
John Calvin Stevens (Am. 1855-1940)One of the most important architects of the Queen Anne/Shingle style in Maine at the turn of the 20th century. Stevens was also an avid landscape painter and belonged to a Portland, Maine art group called "The Brushians". He exhibited his works with the Boston Art Club, and the Portland (Maine) Society of Art. A 2015 exhibit of his work at the Portland Museum of Art was the most recent and most important retrospective of his painting career. His works rarely appear at auction, as a majority of his pieces are owned by his descendants. His paintings are usually signed with an odd monogram resembling a backward F with an H, few paintings have both the monogram and the signature. Oil on canvas, framed.
