Description
Navy HGU-20/P Clamshell Flight Helmet. An interesting design, made by Robert Shaw Controls Company and flight tested by the Navy from 1965 to 1971; it was also tested and used by the Air Force for the B-1A program. A modified version, called the Launch Entry Helmet, was used by NASA in the early Space Shuttle missions. It features a clear visor, and an internal boom microphone; a single hose (not accompanying this specimen) provided both electronic and oxygen connections. There is a "U. S. Navy" decal on the top front, and remnants of a label at the back of the helmet- see photos. A hand applied number is located on the inner left back portion- where the wearer's lower jaw would be: 186. The helmet is accompanied by what appears to be an original flight bag with a Conmar zipper. This was designed as an integrated head protection helmet with an oxygen breathing system built-in, eliminating the need for a separate mask and providing improved retention under windblast.
