Description
COLLECTION OF PACIFIC NORTHWEST ART
Mid-20th century. Including a carved eagle head by Chivly Chupak, a carving of bears by MacKay, a scrimshaw wolf, and a smooth modernist carving of a bird figure.

Chivly Chup, known in the art world as Chupak, escaped Cambodia's brutal Khmer Rouge regime after the death of his parents. A 12-year-old in a Thai refugee camp, Chupak taught himself how to carve and sold the sculptures to help support his remaining family. Sponsored by an Oregon family at the age of 17, Chupak became fascinated with Native culture, in particular Native Alaskan, and began using the landscape and wildlife as inspiration for his carving. Today Chupak lives in Juneau and works and teaches from his studio.
Bears: 2 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. (6.4 x 19.1 cm.)
