Description
PAIR OF EARLY TURNED SIDE CHAIRS , 34 X 15 SEAT, FROM A NORTH SHORE HOME, Once thought to date from the late seventeenth century, these chairs were part of the collection of Wallace Nutting and were included in the Nutting Collection at the Wadsworth Atheneum. The Atheneum subsequently deemed the chairs to be of ca. 1760-1810 vintage and deaccessioned then in 1991. Inscribed “26.412” in orange-red paint on each chair, in both instances on the back of the uppermost slat. Illustrated in Wallace Nutting's Furniture of the Pilgrim Century (1921), p. 206 and Furniture Treasury (1928), #1833-1834. Sotheby's, New York, October 26, 1991, lot 230 (property deaccessioned by the Wadsworth Atheneum). Pretty sure I have a copy of this catalogue, and if I find it will include it with the chairs. Kaminiski Auctions, Beverly, MA, December 27, 1998, lot 11 .
