Signed by Lawrence Clark Powell on front free endpaper. "Inscribed for Gloria Stuart with affectionate best wishes for her good fortune. Lawrence Clark Powell / Los Angeles June 1934". The colophon terms this the first edition, but the text is based on Lawrence Clark Powell's doctoral dissertation from Université de Bourgogne in Dijon, printed in 1932. Gloria Stuart (1910-2010) is best known as an actress, starring in "Titantic," for which she was nominated for an Oscar. She was also an accomplished printer, first as a student of long-time friend Ward Ritchie, but soon after founding her own private press, Imprenta Glorias. In 1998 she published The Inscriptions at Tor House and Hawk Tower, a volume produced in memory of a visit paid to Tor House with Ward Ritchie and Gordon Newell in 1932. At the time of the inscription Stuart, recently divorced from Newell, had the good fortune to sign a contract with Universal Pictures, an event launching the first chapter in her fascinating career. She would later become a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild before she made her deep impression on fine press printing in California. An intriguing association copy, showing the interconnections of the arts in Northern and Southern California during this fertile period of artistic production in the golden state.
