Description
DESCRIPTION: Elm tree block with affixed inscription on metal plaque. Inscription reads "A Piece of the Elm Tree Formerly Standing in Cambridge, Massachusetts Under Which George Washington Took Command of the American Army. July 3, 1775. Presented by the City of Cambridge. 1924" MEASUREMENTS: 4-5/8" long by 2-3/8" wide by 2-5/8" high. CONDITION: Remnants of large knot in back of wood. Some corrosion to plaque. After the tree rotted and fell over in 1923, it was cut into 1,000 blocks and distributed to state legislatures, fraternal organizations, and historical societies, with approximately 150 being sold commercially. While the story of Washington and the elm tree is now considered a likely myth, its influence remained a piece of local Massachusetts history even after the tree's destruction. AJ IMPORTANT: Before bidding, please read the terms and conditions. When you registered for the auction you agreed to these terms and will be required to comply with them.
