Chinese Famille Rose Hundred Monkey Begonia Porcelain Vase. Potted in globular shape vase, heavy on shoulder, flower wide flaring mouth rim with tall cylindrical neck, raised on ring foot base slight concave. Hand painted ornamentations are rendered in white base color which contrast against famille rose color depicted of hundred monkeys on the forest surrounded with dense tree, rocky rock, cliff and mountain. The monkey is one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, seen as a cheeky, irreverent creature in China always bringing fun and laughter. The character for monkey has a man shooting an arrow at a target, representing a nobleman, the prince of animals: the monkey. In southern China some minority people were presumed to be the descended from them. Monkeys were considered able to drive away evil spirits and for this reason were worshiped and tolerated near houses. There are records of monkeys being kept as pets a thousand years ago.The Under-base bears a reign mark, a six under glazed blue script characters reign mark. Made in The Years of Qianlong Reign Period of The Great Qing Dynasty.
