Description
1898 de Tocqueville Democracy in America Political Philosophy Politics Republic
“America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”
― Alexis de Tocqueville
A rare pre-Civil War edition of Alexis de Tocquevilles “Democracy in America”. De Tocqueville wrote his famous book on American government after a trip he took to United States to study the American penitentiary system. This book covers aspects of government and politics such as popular sovereignty, power of the judicial system, United States Constitution, political parties, freedom of press, methods used to ensure against tyranny, and futures for various races. It also examines the influence of democracy on religions, science, arts, manners, and philosophy.
According to Daniel Gilman, “Democracy in America”
“remains the best philosophical discussion of democracy, illustrated by the experience of the United States, up to the time when it was written, which can be found in any language… When his work appeared, democracy was to some an ideal, a brilliant dream; to others, ruin, anarchy, robbery, murder. De Tocqueville wished to lessen the fears of the latter, the ardor of the former class. He treats Democracy as a fact"
This 1898 edition of Tocquevilles famous treatise was translated into English by Henry Reeve and edited by Francis Bowen, published by The Century.
