Description

Battle Club, Pentecost Island, Vanuatu Islands. 19th C. Dense hardwood club from Southern Pentecost Island. Sharp conical point above flaring form that sits on long shaft that terminates in split bulbous butt that is wrapped with human hair. Top is incised with a series of vertical lines along with same lines on underside of flared flange. Lines are filled with red pigment. Chips along top flange and at top of butt bulb. Old collection number â€œ2870” on shaft. Wear and finish show age and traditional use. Size: 47'' x 4'' x 4'' (119 x 10 x 10 cm).
