This Vintage Original Gouache Painting of the Punisher is in a metal frame with spring clips. The painting appears to be signed on the back but not on the front. I cannot read the artist signature. It measures 33 ½” x 16 ½” framed and the picture measures 27” x 9 ¾”. Painting is in excellent condition, no fading etc. A great piece for a collector of comic book art. A little history: Gouache, body color, or opaque watercolor, is one type of water media, paint consisting of natural pigment, water, a binding agent, and sometimes additional inert material. Gouache is designed to be opaque. Gouache has larger particles and more body, so it looks heavier, denser, and more opaque after it dries. The paint is best used to create a flat wash of color that dries matte. Because it dries so quickly, gouache is ideal for gestural, action, and direct paintings. Gouache has a considerable history, having been used for at least 1200 years. History on the Punisher:
The Punisher made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (cover-dated February 1974).The character is depicted as a Sicilian-American vigilante who employs murder, kidnapping, extortion, coercion, threats of violence, and torture in his campaign against crime. Driven by the deaths of his wife and two children who were killed by the mob for witnessing a killing in New York City's Central Park, the Punisher wages a one-man war on crime using various weapons. A war veteran and a U.S. Marine Corps Scout/Sniper in Force Recon, Castle is skilled in hand-to-hand combat, guerrilla warfare, and marksmanship. He is well known by his skull motif on his chest. The Punisher's brutal nature and willingness to kill made him an anomaly in mainstream American comic books when he debuted in 1974. By the late 1980s, the Punisher was part of a wave of psychologically-troubled antiheroes. At the height of his popularity, the character was featured in four monthly publications: The Punisher, The Punisher War Journal, The Punisher: War Zone, and The Punisher Armory.
