Monumental Sand Mountain Alabama (Dekalb County) Decorated Jug in a rare quart size. This is a new discovery and is simply one of the best examples of southern pottery from Alabama ( in the same range/tier as the Isham Hudson Slave signed jar sold by Cagle Auction in March of 2022 ) to cross the block in sometime. Strong TJ Henry (1837-1921) attribution with glaze and form and their is another example with this handle that was found on a signed shard and would have been a half gallon size . This example is a fresh find/discovery and has a large wavy comb decorations with also a comb star decoration at the top of the jug. One very interesting feature is the highly detailed handle that could strongly be taken as a snake but I believe this to be a from of possible rope style decoration, and comes to a point at lower terminal. The jug shows strong detail with wavy line decoration five lines in each row. Also the just under the lip of jug, also on the shoulder and the mid section of jug. Also a slight degree of concentric line decoration. Again if your a Alabama collector or Museum curator this is going to get anyone fired up about Alabama stoneware. Glaze, well simply outstanding with rich dark honey roasted color browns to a very light rich light honey lime color that shows areas under the handle and below terminal. This is very important in southern stoneware and one of three known and the other two are damaged examples with one being in shards. Base is smooth clay as one found on Sand Mountain stoneware. The example is again museum quality with No chips, cracks or repairs. I challenge one to find a more top shelf example that is in mint museum quality condition. Standing 7" Tall
