Description
British-style Heavy Cavalry Sword,
probably America, c. 1780s.
The British iron hilt with slotted guard originally with three branches long ago removed, joining the tapering knuckle bow engraved 'E/36' connecting to a tall ovoid pommel, ray skin covered spiraling grip with twisted brass wire wrapping, the peen area with old brass plug/repair; French straight single-edge blade with false edge at the tip, one narrow and one wide fuller, the ricasso area with three narrow fullers, traces of etched decoration on both sides of the blade, the back etched 'Fabrique Royale.'
Blade lg. 33 7/8, overall lg. 40 3/4 in.

Condition
Iron hilt toned to deep brown, grip has a shrinkage crack with associated wood loss and scattered insect holes, ray skin covering is degraded on the inboard side adjacent to the grip crack, brass wire is solid, hilt is solid on the blade tang; blade has overall gray mottling and minor pitting at the tip which has lost approx. 1 inch of length, only traces of etched decoration remains, blade edge has several small nicks.
