Description
[Hannibal Hamlin] Two leaves, ALS from Hannibal Hamlin to John Sherman. Hamlin was Abraham Lincoln's vice-president between 1861-1864. Dated 1885 the ALS is to accept an invitation to the unveiling of the Washington Monument. ALS is accompanied by an black and white lithograph of Hannibal Hamlin. "Bangor Jan. 29, 1885/ Hon. John Sherman,/Ch. of Commission &c &c,/ I have been honored in the receipt of the invitation of the Commission in relation to the Dedication of the Washington Monument, to be present at the same on the 21st day of Feb. I have also received your invitation for the same purpose; in which you express the hope the that I will accept the invitation tendered to me./ In view of the importance of the event and its National Character, I do not feel at liberty to decline your invitation, and I cordially accept the same./ I will be present on the Dedication, unless prevented by some course not now known or anticipated/ I have the honor to be very truly yours/ Hannibal Hamlin.".
