Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautifully preserved and matching pair of large leather and wood tapadero or hooded stirrups, this indented shape is known as "monkey-nosed." The tooled leather is sewn over the wooden stirrups, and the exteriors are textured with a checker motif. The wooden stirrup frame is held in place by leather cords that are woven and knotted through the covers, the terminal tips accented with rosettes. These covers protected both the rider and horse from thorns and rough brush and provided insulation in colder weather. Tapaderos were also popular with children or novice riders because the cover prevented the foot from being pushed forward through the stirrup which mitigated the chances of being dragged after a fall. Size: 11" L x 5" W x 11" H (27.9 cm x 12.7 cm x 27.9 cm)
Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960s
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
