Item Details
Description
Description: This lot includes an important finely carved Highboy, circa 1760-1790. Walnut construction. All Bat Wing brass appears to be original, with (2) bails Short. Top center drawer has a small handle, (bottom center drawer's handle is partially remaining, minor fix). Has a broken arch top or pediment with carved rosettes in front of a full bonnet top. The pediment has a central carved flame twist spire or finial flanked by two more, one on either side. The drawer configuration in the top chest is, three over two, over four, all are graduated from top to bottom. The base or bottom chest has one over three drawers also graduated from top to bottom. The top case and lower case are both flanked by fluted quarter columns. The top center drawer is heavily carved in high style, Chippendale shell surrounded by carved vines and leaves. The bottom center drawer also heavily carved with a Chippendale Style shell and other ornate decorations. The very nice skirt is carved with a centrally located shell. The highboy rests on Chippendale cabriole legs with carved ball & claw feet or, (tallons). Front legs have carved knees. Condition: Overall great, see pictures. Normal rubs associated with being 240+ years old. Upper cabinet and lower cabinet sides have some separation due to age, but shows well and does not take away from the appearance. Legs have some rubs and dings, but will polish up nice. We left it exactly as found in the home, and detailing or cleaning we will leave up to you. Still retains it's original or at least early wall paper finish on the the top outsides of the full bonnet. Construction is all done by hand, Chamfered drawer bottoms, Hand dovetailed drawers, with Rose head nails. Finish is a bit light, possible due to cleaning or finish work sometime during it's history. Provenance: Part of an estate. Consignor Stated her father purchased it. Records show he did most of his collection purchases at Kleinfelters, Conestoga and sometimes Pennypacker Auctions. This outstanding highboy she believes he bought privately in Lehigh County. Due to it's style and quality it most likely traveled there on a move from Philadelphia sometime in its history. This has been in the family home since before the early 1980's. He did most of his collecting during the 1960's and 1970's before his passing. It remained in the home until 2022. Measures approx. 100"h x 43.5"l x 23.5"wThere are additional photos for this piece that show the bottom of the drawers, the back, and the rosehead nails. Not asking for these photos is not an excuse for not having seen them. Please inquire about these photos if you have more questions
