Description
Benny Carter (American/North Carolina, 1943-2014), "The Dream #44: President Obama", paint on shaped panel, signed and titled lower center, 15 5/8 in. x 12 5/8 in.; together with "Snakes", 4 oils on metal, each inscribed, 2 3/8 in. x 22 1/2 in. to 3 3/4 in. x 27 in. (5 pcs.) Note: When suffering from depression after being laid off from his job at Halstead Metal Products, artist Benny Carter picked up a brush and began painting. He was heavily influenced by the September 11 attacks and often painted elaborate cityscapes of New York City, some diminutive in size. Carter filled his home and estate in Mayodan, North Carolina with his own paintings and assemblages which were heavily influenced by the work of fellow folk artist, R. A. Miller. The snakes and bust in the lot offered here are reminiscent of Miller’s cutouts but retain the characteristic flair of Carter’s own distinct style.
