Description
DESCRIPTION: Pair of 18th Century hand carved Japanese Baku elephant carvings. Being hand crafted in the Japanese Edo period these two matching Baku elephant carvings are in immaculate condition. Used in Japanese temples and shrines to ward off bad dreams and nightmares by devouring any evil spirit that entered it's sacred space. Extremely rare to find two identical Baku's in such good condition from the same period. Crafted from richly grained single wood blocks and features a short, squat design with trunks that curve under, tusks which protrude from each side, slanted eyes with their original vegetable dye color, and large exaggerated lobed ears. Each mouth is slightly opened with a distended tongue surrounded by razor sharp rows of teeth. Both statues have an extremely weathered surface from being exposed to centuries of the elements. Both are of pristine quality and rarity.
