Item Details
Description
[SLAVERY & ABOLITION] -- [BROWN, John]. Photograph of John Brown's Grave. Lake Placid, NY: Chester D. Moses & Co., n.d.
3 7/8 x 5 in. silver gelatin photograph on cardstock mount (toning, spotting, and silver mirroring to image; wear to mount edges and corners including loss to upper right corner). Chester Moses & Co. blindstamp to mount recto, stamp to verso. Central to the image is the headstone marking the grave of John, Oliver, and Captain John Brown (John Brown's grandfather) on the Brown Farm in North Elba, New York. It reads, "In Memory of Capt. John Brown Who Died At New york , Sept ye3, 1776 in the 48 year of his Age. / John Brown, Bron May 9, 1800. was Executed at Charle-ston, Va. Dec. 2. 1859. / Oliver Brown, Born Mar. 9. 1839. was [killed] at Harpers [Ferry Oct. 7, 1859]." The area around the headstone appears to be rather overgrown.[With:] 5 1/4 x 8 3/8 in. albumen print on cardstock mount (significant spotting/soiling throughout, horizontal crease with some separation, mount likely trimmed). Mount with Sutliff & Farrand blilndstamp (partial). The illustrated portrait of Brown featured here appears to be after a photograph of him taken in May of 1859.
