Description
A group of twelve California coastal sketches. Artist: Xavier Martinez (1869-1943). Title/Description: Twelve sketches showing coastal views/subjects, including the San Francisco Bay before and during bridge construction. Signature: One with monogram stamp, the others unsigned. Date Created: c. 1900s-1930s. Material/Ground: Charcoal/Conte crayon, colored pencil on paper. Size: Ranging from 4in x 4 1/8in to 11 3/4in x 9in. Condition: Overall good; toning, some edge creases/tears. The folder is lettered with "Cloud Dynamics, to Micaela, May 1932", by Martinez. In her oral history, "San Francisco Bay Area Writers and Artists" (Bancroft Library 1962-1969:63), Elsie Whitaker Martinez speaks of Marty's "cloud drawings", which could relate to the folder in this lot. However, it's unknown if the enclosed drawings are associated, or (more likely) some or all assembled/inserted at a different time. From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989).
