COMMENTS: Skillfully carved keyblock, highly detailed. Toraji Ishikawa's famous 1934 series "Ten Types of Female Nudes" ("Rajo Jusshu no Uchi") has become a masterpiece in the "shin-hanga" movement. Due to their sensual and provocative depictions, the Japanese government immediately banned by censorship these sensual designs owing to their "pornographic" nature. The art-deco style of Toraji's "Ten Nudes" reflects the romantic and nostalgic atmosphere of the Taisho/early Showa (1920/30s) era which became known as "moga" (or "modern girl"), depicting young Japanese girls as being independent, modern, and fashionable.
