REI (RAY) MORIMURA (b. 1948) graduated from Tokyo Gakugei University in 1970. Initially focused on abstract painting, he taught himself the art of wood block printing and began print making in the traditional Japanese manner. He uses oil based inks rather than the water color inks that most print makers prefer. Today, his prints are widely appreciated in Japan and the west for their evocative beauty and combination of modern and traditional perspectives. Morimura's work can be found in the collections of: Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Yale University; University of Maryland; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford UK. He has exhibited at many international shows including Contemporary Woodblock Prints of Korea, China and Japan Ilmin Museum of Art, Seoul; and has had solo exhibitions in Tokyo and Seattle. He is a professor at Zohei University & Nihon Kogakuin Creators College, both in Tokyo.
