Description
Pennsylvania Painted Pine and Poplar Dower Chest Dated 1787. Attributed to Johann Flory of Lancaster County. Inscribed ''Diese Kist Gehoret Mier, Johonne K. Kuster 1787''. "Diese Kist Gehoret Mier" translates to "This Is Mine". Orange/brown ground with two horses and three starbursts on front panel. Molded lid, interior till, wrought iron strap hinges and jaw lock, dovetailed case, wrought iron drop-bail handles and molded bracket base. Similar examples in Fabian, "The Pennsylvania German Decorated Chest", pages 154 and 155. 19"h. x 50"w. x 22"d.
