Description
HOLLIS SIGLER (1941-2001) "The Torture of Guilt" Hollis Sigler was a leading feminist artist, who passed of breast cancer. After her diagnosis in 1985 she created a pictorial journal of her journey with cancer. Art in America called it "one of contemporary art's richest and most poignant treatments of sickness and health.... Taking on a kind of religious conviction, her jewel - colored symbols imbue a death-haunted situation with miraculous, celebratory life". It has been noted by several doctors that Sigler gave voice to women struggling with the reality of breast cancer. The following message is transcribed on the trim of the inside of the frame. This is just an approximation of what is written. "Only when production technology has been changed to eliminate the pollutant has the environment been substantially improved. Where it remains unchanged, where an attempt is made to trap the pollutant in an appointed control device"33.5" x 28.5" x 2.5"
