This is an attractive Civil War light beige silk wedding gown dating from the 1862 period, that a mid to upper class woman would wear.
A regal one piece in construction, gown, that was a deaccession from the Strong Museum in Rochester New York. The gown still retains original Museum ID catalog sewn in tags on back neck line at closure, as well as museum papers of catalog identification information.

The bodice shows crisp simple seam lines and is decorated with gathered ruched tiers formed into a V shaped front. Simple upper front shaped neckline, off the shoulders, small capped sleeves with gathered ruching and trimmed with decorative lacing and tassel. Silk decorated with gathered applied panel of small pleats.
The bodice high waist has a deep point at the center front and back emphasizing the figure with piping. The bodice has a back like corset lacing closure fastening into a tight fitting bodice. The bodice is lined with cotton, silk and fabric covered whalebone strips.

The front of the skirt has unusual silk pleating starting a waist band extending to the hem line.

The skirt has exaggerated proportions tending to flatter in front with pleating fanning out, creating an enormous expanse of fabric and a wide circumference at the hem. The skirt has a hidden pocket and is lined.

CONDITION

The gown is in poor/fair condition. The silk has fabric splits in skirt, some are small and some are long openings, and with numerous stains. Has underarm discoloration in bodice.
The skirt is in poor condition with tears and small scattered discoloration stains.
