Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE; West Mexico, Zacatecas culture, Early Classic Period, ca. 250 to 450 CE. A hand-built pair of pottery vessels from ancient Mexico. The highly burnished vessel accentuated with a layer of umber-red slip is Maya. The other Zacatecas bichrome dish is negative resist painted with linear and stippled geometric motifs. Unlike many other ancient civilizations, the Maya did not have cemeteries or necropoli. Instead, they buried human remains with ritual caches of pottery filled with offerings of jade, beads, and other precious items throughout the landscape in which they lived. Cache vessels like this example were typically sealed with form-fitting lids to protect the interred contents. Size of Maya jar: 6.5" Diameter x 8" H (16.5 cm x 20.3 cm

Hair line fissures on Zacatecas dish with stabilizer added to reinforce the rim, otherwise intact. Find site written on interior rim surface. Maya redware jar has chips to rim, otherwise intact and with surface wear and pitting commensurate with age. Light mineral deposits on surface.
