Description
Peter Burnitz (1824 Frankfurt on the Main - 1886 ibid.): Woodland with dense group of trees, c. 1850, Pencil
Technique: Watercolored Pencil on Paper
Date: c. 1850
Description: Typical landscape sketch by the Frankfurt painter, which instead of pathos and heroic staging carry an immediacy between artist and nature. Burnitz became acquainted with this modern impressionist approach to plein air painting during his stays in France at Barbizon's school. Thus his works, which depict regional landscapes such as the Taunus, bear the innovative impetus of French open-air painting.

Condition
Rather good condition. Clear waterstain on the lower right corner of the sheet. Tear in the upper centre, fixed with adhesive tape on the reverse side. Corners are bumped. At the right margin with short tears. Paper slightly discoloured due to its age.
