Description
Whaling Bark "Helen Snow", New Bedford, built in a rather crude manner, but by the Captain of the ship, (as described below). Having the hunting and rendering details of whaling gear and ship architecture, including six longboats, rendering vats, cutting scaffold, open stern, etc. Cloth sails and accurate rigging in scale cordage. On tubular steel rack for wall mounted display. 66" tall overall, 87" long, 32" wide spars. Broken bowsprit, loss to rigging at stern, soiled. This model was built by the consignor's great-great-uncle, William Swain, who was captain of the vessel when it sailed out of New Bedford, MA. The Swain family boasted more than 300 family members who served as captains of whalers out of Nantucket and New Bedford. William Swain owned Naushon Island in Vineyard Sound before selling it to John Murray Forbes (1813-1898) Boston railroad magnate, merchant, philanthropist and abolitionist.Damaged by ice in the Arctic on August 19, 1872 and abandoned August 31; later found and taken to San Francisco, sold to pay salvage, later sailed from San Francisco and transferred to Russia.
