Description
Hamilton, Ontario. Ca: 1880. Pine, wire mesh, string, cotton, glass. Extremely well detailed model of a three-masted vessel, under steam power with the sails down. Four well carved figures on deck. Brightly painted in red, black, yellow, green, blue and white. The model rests within its original painted and decorated base. Its glass fronted varnished pine case with carrying handle served as a time capsule for this intricate vessel. It survives in exceptionally intact condition. Marked, "London" to either side of bow and "City. London" on life preserver. Complete. This sailing vessel was prominently displayed in the front window of 'The Old Stationary Store', King Street West (Jackson Square) in Hamilton, Ontario for many years. Owner Wilfred Jewell (Jewell Brothers) resisted many offers to purchase over the years. In their book, Canadian Folk Art to 1950 authors John Fleming and Michael Rowan feature this model on page 387. They suggest that the Jewell's may have used its name, The City of London, to boast the store's "Made in Britain" merchandise for sale. Showcase: 28.5"H x 30.75"W x 11"D.
